Social Worker

 

This position was created in order to provide a personalized level of interventions to Galapagos students.  While it is expected that the social worker will work on a regular basis with approximately twenty students the social worker will also meet with other students less frequently.

The overall goal of the position is to ensure that students are provided with the type of support and intervention (whether internal or external) necessary to promote the academic and psychological development of GCS students.

The following is a non-exhaustive list of responsibilities.  Like all GCS staff, the social worker will be expected to provide support on an as needed basis even in areas not normally considered to be within the purview of a social worker.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to instructors in relation to students with behavioral, academic and other adjustment problems
  • Assist parents and families in connecting with resources throughout the community to support academic, physical, psychological development
  • Provide counseling to students on an assigned basis as well as an as needed basis (i.e. office referrals)
  • Build relationships with community organizations, faith based organizations, governmental agencies and other charter schools to ensure that GCS students are able to benefit from resources throughout the city
  • Develop procedures for instructors to request services while ensuring that proper documentation is created and filed in compliance with legal requirements
  • Work with the administration and instructors on PASS plans and/or behavior plans
  • Work with the administration and instructors to evolve the GCS discipline plan and culture that encourage academic, social and psychological development
  • Observe instructors in classroom settings in order to provide feedback and provide appropriate resources
  • Provide staff trainings

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the administration in the development and implementation of the College 101 program
  • Organize the “Ticket for Show” Luncheons
  • Assist the administration in developing a middle school summer program which promotes off campus learning through university resources
  • Provide supervision in the morning and afternoon and at other times when needed

 

Additionally, the social worker is encouraged to participate in after school programming.  Such programming has typical included tutoring as well as non-academic activities.  The social worker is encouraged to consider sponsoring activities which would promote in the development of well-rounded students.

Like all positions, the social worker position is officially a year round position.
