Namaste Charter School is a new charter school that opened in 2004 on the near south side of Chicago. They served only kindergarten and first grades in the first year and will grow to serve grades K – 8 over the next eight years. In Fall 2008, they will serve K-5th grade. Our Mission:
Namaste believes higher student achievement can be fostered by nourishing the mind and body of children through rigorous academic instruction, training in health and nutrition, and regular physical exercise. The school incorporates health, nutrition, and athletics into its rigorous curriculum, developed to ensure literacy, numeracy and a lifelong love of learning.
School Model:
Namaste is a year round school. Teachers and students get the months of December, April and August off of traditional school. During these months, students have the option of attending enrichment intercession programming.
Teacher Leader Job Description:
Namaste Charter School is looking for an instructional leader to join the school’s founder and principal in providing instructional leadership to teachers and staff. The lead teacher will be released from full-time classroom duties to model lessons, mentor teachers, observe and evaluate teachers and provide ongoing teacher professional development. Although the majority of duties will be as an educational mentor, the teacher leader would also take part in school and staff management, parent and community involvement, and compliance management and monitoring.
Specifically, they are looking for staff members with:
• Belief in the mission and vision of the school: a holistic approach to movement education integrating cognitive, physical and emotional learning.
• Experience working with a diverse student body and providing professional development to adults
• Strong organizational skills and the flexibility necessary to be part of a start-up operation
• Interest in working collaboratively and facilitating teacher relationships and reflection to improve instruction for all students
• Knowledge of balanced literacy curriculum, math trailblazers and FOSS science curriculum
• Understanding of Dual Language programs and Spanish Language literacy
• Commitment to using assessment to drive instruction and helping teachers identify strengths and weaknesses in their practice
• Willingness to consistently manage and monitor student behavior employing school-wide system and assisting teachers in doing so
• Dedication to actively engage parents in educational advocacy for their children
• Exhibits an entrepreneurial approach to teacher leadership and directly manages teaching staff by monitoring teacher effectiveness
• Expertise in 3-6 or 6-8 grades is a plus!
Starting date: Summer 2008
Compensation:
Namaste Charter School considers instructional staff to be its most valuable resource and is dedicated to supporting and compensating staff appropriately.
