Organization Description:

The Academia Bilingüe de la Comunidad Public Charter School (ABC), which opened in the Fall of 2005, is a Bilingual English and Spanish immersion public charter school in Washington DC, serving grades 6-8.  ABC is a free and open to all DC residents regardless of current English or Spanish proficiency.

The mission of the ABC is to graduate adept learners, effective communicators, and community leaders who are culturally aware and prepared to use their academic skills and bilingual proficiency to succeed in rigorous high schools, post-secondary education and society.

Position Summary:

The Head of School will report directly to the Founder/Executive Director and the Board of Trustees.  This position will serve as the instructional leader for the school with a primary focus on ensuring academic achievement and making data-driven instructional decisions within the scope of the mission.  In addition, the Head of School will develop and maintain successful working relationships with parents, students, faculty, staff and the Board of Trustees.  The Head of School will be the supervisor of the instructional faculty – these supervisory responsibilities include developing effective teaching observation tools, coaching staff, daily management of students and faculty.  The Head of School will also be responsible for implementing ABC’s discipline system.   The position is expected to begin in June 2008.

 

 Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Education, certification as a school administrator, MBA or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Extremely strong leadership, management and communication skills
  • 10-12 years relevant work experience demonstrable track record of success
  • Adaptability to changing environments
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish
  • Experience in an urban school environment

 

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to improve the educational options for children.  This person will be focused on creating systems to promote and measure academic progress.  They will understand the unique challenges of working in an urban school with a diverse population but will not accept any excuses.  Simultaneously, the Head of School will reinforce the school’s collaborative culture and be a consultative leader.  They will be comfortable in working in the fluid situation that is a new inner city charter school.
