High School Counselor

The statistics on high school graduation and college enrollment prove that there a dramatic need for new, high quality options in secondary education. The UNO Charter School Network has been involved with educational reform in Chicago for the past 20 years and has responded to the educational dilemma by establishing four academically successful K-8 charter schools since 1997 and will open, in response to parent demand, a quality high school that promotes UNO’s standard of high expectations and structured school environment.

UNO Charter School Network believes in elevating the existing standards for student achievement by providing a quality high school that allows for students to practice college and career skills that will ensure their future success. The vision of the UNO Charter High School is to graduate global, model citizens via rigorous critical study to be self-disciplined, articulate, entrepreneurial, and life long learners. The focus of the UNO Charter High School is both career and college preparatory, allowing students the opportunity to explore skills and content necessary for their future endeavors.
UNO is searching for counselors for our first high school opening in August of 2008. If you possess the enthusiasm and commitment to fulfill the promise of public education and are interested in joining our team to create a unique atmosphere of discipline and rigor throughout the school, we invite you to apply for the Counselor position.
The High School Counselor will work with teachers, administrators, parents, and community organizations and other stakeholders to provide intervention and prevention services to students and their families. In this role, the High School Counselor will be expected to develop and coordinate a comprehensive system of support and outreach to help our students succeed in school and in life. In addition, High School Counselors will guide a program, manage a case load, serve as Class Advisor to a class of students, and have an advisory. Counselors will be assigned at least one of the following programs: Advisory, Family & Community, Leadership & Campus Activities, Life Planning, Senior Planning, and Outreach.
Our ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in counseling (clinical and/or non-clinical) with pre-teens or teens
- 1-3 years of administrative or management experience (preferred)
- Baccalaureate social work degree or Master’s degree in social work (MSW)
- MSW with 2 years post master’s supervised experience or MSW with 2 years post master’s direct clinical social work experience (preferred)
- Current Social Work License (optional)
- Illinois Type 73 or equivalent (preferred)
- National Counselors, NCE or NCMHCE, Licensure or Illinois State Social Work License or equivalent (preferred)
