Program Associate, Facing History and Ourselves



Position Description

FHAO is currently seeking a Program Associate for the Chicago region who will have a major responsibility for delivering Facing History program services, including outreach and working with teachers of the program; co-facilitating professional development workshops and summer institutes; maintaining follow-up contact; coordinating projects, community outreach, and written reports. The successful candidate must be comfortable with integrating the use of Internet and other New Media technologies into programs which equip teachers with the content, skills, and tools to teach middle and high school students about the consequences of racism, antisemitism, and violence. This position is budgeted to begin immediately.

Responsibilities include:

Delivering program services to new and continuing Facing History teachers, including:

  • Giving awareness presentations to educators and community groups.
  • Co-facilitating professional development workshops and summer institutes.
  • Assist in the implementation of new models of FHAO staff development using Internet resources.
  • Conducting follow-up activities with participants from workshops and institutes, including site visits, FHAO Internet resources (including new models of online program delivery), telephone calls, meetings, and letters.
  • Consulting with teachers on design, resources and speakers for Facing History and Ourselves courses.
  • Identifying outstanding Facing History and Ourselves teachers for local and national teacher education teams.
  • Submitting accurate and timely information and documentation of program activities through weekly summaries of activity to program administrative team.
  • Participating as part of the Chicago team to identify opportunities for growth and healthy development of the regional program, including:
  • Identifying educational opportunities in urban settings
  • Initiating and participating in community outreach.
  • Actively participating in Chicago staff meetings and team-building activities.
  • Participating in pilot program projects as assigned.
  • Conducting program presentations at community fundraising events and Board meetings as assigned.
  • Consulting on budget preparation and plans of action, as requested.
  • Contributing material to Facing History and Ourselves publications, newsletters and briefings.
  • Enhancing program content understanding, including regular participation in program meetings and national program staff retreats.

Essential Skills/Qualities:

  • BA/BS required; MA preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of European and US history required; English/language arts/humanities experience a plus; passion for quality education.
  • Interest in, and ability to articulate the mission of this non-profit.
  • Experienced teacher with excellent communication and facilitation skills; preferably in a variety of educational settings
  • Knowledge of Internet and web communication for support of national network of teachers and students.
  • Familiarity with leading productivity and presentation software a plus.
  • Ability to organize and execute tasks in a non-profit context.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle for school and community outreach visits.
