Director of Academics/Principal

 

Galapagos Charter School (GCS) is seeking a Director of Academics.

Galapagos Charter School is dedicated to preparing students to be responsible, productive, college-educated adults who will prosper in the global economy. GCS opened in the fall of 2005 and has demonstrated success in educating students on Chicago's west side. GCS posted the second highest growth in 2006-07 ISAT scores of all Renaissance 2010 schools. This position requires an individual who is willing to push the limits in order to ensure student achievement.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of all academic program with special emphasis on reading/writing
  • Providing instructional and classroom management support of all instructional staff
  • Developing relevant professional development programming- with an emphasis on raising student achievement
  • Managing all disciplinary matters with an emphasis on identifying underlying causes with the goal of providing strategies to reduce non-instructional interruptions
  • Overseeing the needs of special education students in conjunction with the relevant instructors and case managers
  • Ensuring, in conjunction with the Executive Director, that GCS is in compliance with all health, building, legal and reporting requirements
  • Creating, in conjunction with the Executive Director, a overall strategy for continuous school improvement with a focus on accelerating student achievement Implementing non-instructional programming (i.e. after-school programming)
  • Implementing a summer school program which complements the academic programming
  • Overseeing assessment such a ISAT and NWEA MAP
  • Analyzing data in order to drive school wide improvement
  • Creating and ensuring a culture in which academic achievement is the overarching goal
  • Communicating with Chicago Public Schools and ISBE as needed
  • Ensuring a continuation of existing GCS culture, procedures and policies
  • Primary Qualifications:
  • A minimum of two years experience in education administration, preferably in an urban, charter environment. Experience creating and delivering professional development tailored to specific identified needs. Experience coaching instructors in the areas of classroom management and instruction with the end result being increase student achievement. Evidence of increased student achievement. Ability to analyze and discern information from data in order to develop effective instructional strategies. Ability to communicate effectively in within a multi-cultural setting. Strong MS Office skills
  • Reporting:
  • The Director of Academics reports directly to the Executive Director of Operations. The Director of Academics will be held accountable to academic progress.
