High School Humanities Teacher

 

Young Women's Leadership Charter School is looking for a highly motivated individual who seeks to join them in their mission to inspire urban girls to engage in rigorous college preparatory learning in a small school focused on math, science and technology that nurtures their self-confidence and challenges them to achieve. 

Primary Areas of Responsibility  

  • Develop and teach 9th grade Humanities and Reading & Witing classes in collaboration with the whole staff that is aligned with the mission of the school
  • Facilitate and monitor academic, personal, and social development of each student
  • Lead students in assigned classes and advisory groups
  • Develop both classroom and school wide assessments
  • Work as part of the Junior Academy, collaborating to create a positive learning environment for all students
  • Work as part of the Humanities Content Area Team, collaborating to create a developmental literacy learning experience for all students
  • Facilitate collaboration and communication with parents/guardians
  • Participate in ongoing professional development; participate in self-, peer- and whole school evaluation

Candidates must possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree and Illinois Teaching Credential required, advanced degree in education preferred
  • Knowledge, coursework, and experience teaching chemistry
  • A relentless commitment to the work of sustaining an innovative environment for young women
  • Ability to respond with flexibility to demands and requirements of a small school environment
  • Demonstrated interest in public school reform and/or issues of gender equity
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with other teachers, staff and other community members
  • Previous experience working with people from diverse educational, socio-economic, family, and cultural backgrounds and willingness to cultivate relationships with students, families, and staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Ability to integrate technology into student learning activities and effectively utilize technology for personal/professional productivity
  • Ability to critically analyze own teaching practice and make changes when necessary
  • Ability to accept feedback from peers and colleagues and implement suggestions
  • Willingness to adapt teaching practice to effectively utilize an alternative assessment and grading system
  • Ability to maintain a fully functioning chemistry laboratory and design and implement a wide range of chemistry experiments
