
Middle and High School Teachers
ACT Charter School seeks to provide under-served children with a college-preparatory curriculum. The teaching staff is the heart of any school and its programs and curriculum. In addition to their subject area responsibilities, all ACT faculty teach a reading class and serve as an advisor to a group of students. The teaching staff in particular is expected to drive the school's educational program and participate in constant reflection, critical review and improvement.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- An Illinois teaching certificate -or- 1) Current enrollment in a certification program; 2) 5 years of experience in your field of expertise; 3) passing scores on the Illinois certification test of basic skills and subject-matter test
- Previous experience working with African-American and Latino students
- Ability to address student skill deficits without sacrificing critical thinking
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
- Experience with or willingness to develop a project-based curriculum
- Reflective about teaching practice
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- English certification preferred for Humanities positions
Responsibilities:
A teacher's primary professional responsibility is classroom instruction of ACT students. Classroom duties include, but are not limited to the following: Create structured lessons which prepare students for success on both the ACT curriculum and standardized tests. Submit unit plans using the Understanding by Design format. Grade student work in a timely manner. Record daily attendance for each class via computer and in official teacher record book for homeroom/advisory. Record student grades . Contact parents regarding student's progress. Seek and participate in continuing professional development. Additional professional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Attend and participate at faculty and administrative meetings, parent conferences, open house, other school functions, and in service training sessions. Prepare for classroom instruction. Take responsibility for some non-classroom activity which adds value to the school community. Administer a variety of student assessment tools. Assist in the development of teacher evaluation procedures. Assist in the development of school policies and procedures. Perform other duties as the needs of the school and needs of the students may demand.
The Academy of Communications and Technology Charter School is looking for teachers for the 2008-2009 school-year, positions to begin in July 2008. ACT serves students in grades 6-12, approximately 50 students at each grade level . They are a small school with an intimate learning environment and a commitment to helping students make college a realistic option after high school. ACT is a community-based school dedicated to strengthening the West Garfield Park neighborhood and the greater west side for its current residents. ACT strikes a balance between progressive education and attention to student skill deficits.
