
College Counselor
Job Description
The College Counselor:
• Is the primary contact for information regarding Perspectives’ students college admittance, retention, and career exploration;
• Displays discretion, confidentiality, honesty and integrity in his/her relationships with the differing sectors of Perspectives and wider community;
• Maintains and further develops high standards of business efficiency at Perspectives;
• Demonstrates initiative and responsibility in the role of College Counselor;
• Exhibits a strong commitment to the ethos of Perspective Charter Schools;
• Keeps abreast of all local, State and Federal government policies, regulations and legislation in so far as they affect Perspectives.
Specific Skills and Attributes
The College Counselor exhibits:
• A high level of managerial expertise (including the ability to lead, consult, delegate, analyze and plan);
• A high degree of competence in organizational matters related to college admissions and events;
• Exceptional application of knowledge in college scholarship attainment, financial aid, admissions, and registration procedures, and the acquisition of needed additional information regarding post-secondary plans;
• Flexibility to deal with a rapidly developing school environment;
• Strong competencies in test data analysis;
• Excellent verbal and written communication proficiencies.
Relationships
The College Counselor is required to recognize the complexities of the relationships between the Board of Directors, the Principal, teaching staff, students, administration, IT and maintenance staff, and Perspectives’ parents. Additionally, the College Counselor can efficiently build relationships with colleges, universities, and other post-secondary educational institutions to ensure successful matriculation for our students. The College Counselor upholds the roles and responsibilities to each group and among individual members to seek and encourage the development of positive relationships between all sectors of Perspectives’ learning community.
Detailed Duties
The following list of duties is descriptive of the College Counselor’s role. In some areas specific descriptors have been listed, while in others the description is listed in more general terms. As such, the duties should be regarded as an indication of the areas of responsibility and involvement, but that time and experience determines extent. The College Counselor must understand that in a rapidly developing school situation a reasonable degree of flexibility is essential. The role often demands after hours involvement at meetings, presentations and attendance at school and associations’ conferences.
The College Counselor, then, is required to undertake the duties specified in the following areas:
A. College Preparation
· Assist in the development of a college plan for each grade level to assure each student is able to succeed after high school;
· Organize visits to and from colleges with college admissions representatives;
· Teach a college-preparatory course;
· Collaborate with teachers when implementing the college-preparatory curriculum for the integration core subject matter; (resumes/English; career exploration/Science)
· Work with individual students regarding college/post-secondary options.
B. College Admittance
· Organize and guide college application process to ensure college acceptance;
· Plan and host Parent Nights ore related events to inform families about financial aid, scholarships, and application procedures;
· Organize, distribute, and monitor college/career resource guides;
· Maintain and alert school community concerning upcoming college events;
· Obtain and analyze student test/academic performance data for college applications and scholarships;
· Monitor and evaluate college acceptance and attendance rates.
C. College Retention
· Create mechanism to track Perspectives’ graduates college retention rate;
· Communicate regularly with Perspectives graduates at post-secondary educational institutions;
· Evaluate success indicators that contribute to successful college retention.
D. Standardized Tests
· Coordinate all standardized-testing procedures and events;
· Establish partnerships with professional development and publisher workshops regarding standardized tests;
· Communicate professional development options concerning standardized tests and related curricula.
