Accelerated Reading Coordinator/Teacher

The Accelerated Reading Coordinator/Teacher is responsible for the education of the students entrusted to his/her care through both delivery of the instructional program and modeling of appropriate skills, attitudes and behaviors. It is the teacher who motivates, encourages, and inspires students to excel in all their endeavors and who sets goals and expectations that challenge students to meet and expand their potentials. The success of each student hinges on the success and vigilance of the teacher. There is no greater relationship in the school than that between the teacher and student.

The Accelerated Reading Center Coordinator/Teacher (ARCC/T) is responsible for proper care and orderliness of all books and equipment in the Accelerated Reading Center. The ARCC must maintain excellent communication with the classroom teachers. He/she is immediately accountable to the principal. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Proper labeling and organization of all books so they correspond to the Accelerated Reader program
  • Placement of all book orders and follow-through to track the order until delivery
  • Record keeping and accountability for all books checked out of the Accelerated Reading Center
  • Administer S.T.A.R. test at the beginning of the year for new students, and at the end of every grading period for all students
  • Installation and maintenance of Accelerated Reader program on the computer
  • Creating a comfortable, clean and orderly space in the Accelerated Reading Center that motivates and excites students to read
  • Creating special displays, promotions, etc to spark interest in reading
  • Running an at-risk report of the Accelerated Reader every Friday afternoon
  • Coordinating the school wide effort to maintain Catalyst School- Circle Rock's status as a Model School and the Reading Center as a Model Reading Center by the Reading Renaissance Program
  • Tracking student certification levels and creating certificates every grading period
  • Other responsibilities include: Facilitates literature circles, book talks, author studies, "story-time"
  • Coordinates school-wide literacy events
  • Serves on the school-wide committees; including the literacy committee

Required: Illinois Teacher Certification K-9 w/ Reading or Library Science Endorsements *Endorsement requirement may be waived temporarily with a commitment from the teacher to pursue an endorsement in reading or library science

Preferred: Experience working in an urban school setting Experience working with students grades K-8 Starting
