The Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) is the leading Turnaround school management organization working to transform the lowest-performing Chicago Public Schools. Our mission is to select visionary leaders with exceptional management and instructional leadership skills who as a team can make a significant impact in public education. All AUSL schools are CPS performance schools. The leaders of these schools have a unique opportunity to dramatically improve student achievement at chronically low-performing public schools. Currently, we are seeking experienced elementary and high school principals for our schools. AUSL will select principals who have effectively advocated, nurtured and sustained a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and professional growth of staff. Each possesses competencies which are critical to succeed in a turnaround school: orientation toward results, action, impact and influence; development of high performing teams; strategic planning and problem solving skills for immediate success; and the confidence to lead in a challenging situation while believing in the ability to effect change.
Job Summary:
The work of the principal will include but not be limited to:
- leading the implementation of strategies for improving student achievement;
- leading teacher teams to create a coherent instructional program focused on the state standards, higher order thinking skills, inclusion and differentiation;
- facilitating a conversion to the AUSL curriculum and assessment model;
- observing, supervising, coaching and evaluating all staff using a variety of techniques;
- leading a data-driven instruction initiative using interim assessments for the development of instructional action plans in literacy, mathematics and science;
- conducting needs assessments and creating teacher handbooks that concentrate on increased coherence among classrooms and increased use of best practices;
- organizing opportunities for teachers to develop and participate in a professional learning community at both the school level and within the broader AUSL network;
- collaborating with administrators and staff to create a learner-centered, friendly, and safe environment;
- coordinating a concerted effort to address the social-emotional needs/development of every children;
- creating a school infrastructure for materials management and scheduling.
Requirements:
Applicants for a Turnaround principal position must, at a minimum, possess current type 75 Illinois state certification. The successful candidate will have a proven history of innovation, performance, and experience in an urban school setting.
