Full Description:
The Academy for Global Citizenship is seeking a full-time (8:00-4:30) Sustainability and Wellness Teacher beginning December 2009 or January 2010. We are located on the Southwest side of Chicago near 47th and Cicero. The Academy for Global Citizenship is a Chicago Public Contract School which has been founded through Mayor Daley's Renaissance 2010 initiative. Our mission is to empower all students to positively impact the community and world beyond.
General Duties:
- Develops and delivers an integrated sustainability, wellness, physical education, and health curriculum which places a heavy emphasis on movement, mindfulness, and nutrition
- Delivers all lessons in outdoor classroom except for during inclement weather Stays abreast of national best practices
- Seeks out and apply for grants to support programmatic needs and development
- Creates an exemplary early grades sustainability curriculum guide based on research and observations of exemplary practice and aligned to Illinois State Learning Standards and holds citywide professional development regarding this curriculum a minimum of two times per year
Wellness and Physical Education:
- Leads students in daily yoga practice and supports staff in the integration of yoga via professional development at least two times per year
- Administers pre- and post- tests to all students to assess physical fitness and growth during the year
- Evaluates and oversees recess; makes recommendations and establishes games and rules during this time
- Oversees the neatness and cleanliness of the physical fitness storage areas and any facilities used
Sustainability and Garden:
- Maintains excellent care of the school's garden, greenhouse, and compost bins via regular maintenance
- Maintains excellent care of the school's chickens Plants vegetables to maximize yield of a wide variety of edible crops
- Leads lessons in cooking and preserving (i.e. canning and jam making)
- Makes concrete connections in lessons between what students are eating in the lunchroom and what is being grown in the garden
- Reviews the school's Program of Inquiry then communicates with teachers on a per-unit basis (six times per year) to implement AGC sustainability standards
Family and Community Engagement:
- Creates a model program for integrating our families and community in our gardening and wellness education programming
- Leads weekly garden gatherings for our families and community throughout the summer
General for all Teachers:
- Climate and Community: Exemplifies social responsibility, human empathy, fairness, justice, integrity, highly ethical behavior, loyalty and commitment
- Creates a positive and effective school and classroom environment that supports the school's philosophy and goals Meets students' individual needs, supporting differentiated learning. This also includes creating routines, rituals and celebrations that support a sense of class and school community as well as student self-esteem and increasing independence/self sufficiency.
- Contributes to the overall orderliness and organization of the school environment;
- Neatly displays current student work in the classroom and public areas reflecting the current unit of inquiry and each subject area taught
- Works closely with the administration and maintaining excellent communication with parents and supporting public relations.
Teaching and Leaning:
- Actively seeks out collaboration with all classroom and specialist teachers to align curriculum with the school's International Baccalaureate interdisciplinary Program of Inquiry
- Integrates data analysis into weekly lesson and assessment planning
- Carries out daily formal or informal assessments of student achievement via various instruments, observation checklists, rubrics, testing tools, and student portfolios, and documents student achievement through these instruments. Student self-assessment and opportunities for reflection of the day's learning and preparing written reports for parents is integral to this process.
- Maintains accurate attendance and other student records, including report cards, permanent records, etc.
- Assess and report any special needs and/or services the student may require in a timely fashion.
- Follows the law in reporting immediately any suspected child abuse. Development and Innovation:
- Actively seeks-out and participates in ongoing staff development that supports the inquiry approach as outlined in the International Baccalaureate program, balanced literacy, international awareness, and sustainability education
- Pursues advanced studies, certifications, and/or endorsements
- Possess a constant drive to improve the educational program and learning environment of the school
Time:
- Maintains excellent attendance
- Actively participates in all biweekly staff meetings
- Actively participates in at least 50% of yearly family and community outreach by planning and leading parent education nights and after-school events
- Performs other job related duties as assigned or request by Principal
Requirements:
- Master's Degree in a related field preferred
- Bachelor's Degree in related field minimum
- Two or more years of related experience
- Demonstrate a fervent commitment to the school's mission and vision Relentless drive to increase personal and student achievement
- Strong communication, interpersonal and team skills
- Fluent or conversational in Spanish (ideal)
