Full Description:

It is the teacher who motivates, encourages, and inspires students to excel in all their endeavors and who sets goals and expectations that challenge students to meet and expand their potentials. The success of each student hinges on the success and vigilance of the teacher. There is no greater relationship in the school than that between the teacher and student.

The SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER at Catalyst Schools is immediately accountable to the principal and shall have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the school's School Based Problem Solving process
  • Serve a lead during School Based Problem Solving team meetings
  • Assist teachers in developing interventions for students
  • Provide special education resource services to students, using inside and outside of the classroom strategies
  • Complete and keep a written record of daily lesson plans on a weekly basis
  • Track attendance of students to whom services are provided Monitor students during the Renaissance program
  • If needed, be open to teaching a Renaissance class
  • Adhere to and support all school policies as set forth in the Staff and Student Handbooks, especially with regard to student conduct
  • Plan and chaperone grade-level field trips and experiences, including overnight retreats
  • Attend and actively participate in all orientations, staff meetings, in-services, grade-level team meetings, Parent Meetings, Student Conferences, Curriculum Work Weeks, and Mission/Vision Retreats
  • Attend a minimum of three professional growth experiences per year
  • Engage in personal professional goal-setting and evaluation, including teacher peer-observation once per trimester
  • Other responsibilities and supervision duties as assigned, including, but not limited to: substitute teaching, lunch duty, hallway/stairwell/parking lot monitor, chaperoning of field trips/experiences other than the teacher's own grade-level, etc. Implement interim assessments as preparation for standardized testing

In addition, the following qualities and attitudes are essential in the teacher at Catalyst: An understanding, of his/her role as a vocation rather than just a job, which necessitates a willingness to engage in professional growth, personal reflection, and ongoing professional formation A pledge to engage in an appropriately caring, responsible, and loving human relationship with each student entrusted to his/her care, looking upon each student as a younger brother or sister A commitment to support and nurture the seven "C's" of the Catalyst Contract School mission Participate in workshops about the 12 Virtues of a Good teacher and strive to incorporate them in interactions with students, parents/guardians and other school personnel: Prudence, Reserve, Gentleness, Zeal, Vigilance, Generosity, Reverence, Humility, Gravity, Silence, Wisdom and Patience

Qualifications:

Required: Illinois Teacher Certification K- 8 Special Education Certification Desired: Masters in Education Experience in urban school-settings.
