The Catalyst teacher motivates, encourages, and inspires students to excel in all their endeavors and sets individual student goals and expectations that challenge students to meet and expand their potentials. The success of each student hinges on the success and vigilance of the teacher. There is no greater relationship in the school than that between the teacher and student. The TEACHER at Catalyst Schools is immediately accountable to the principal and shall have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Teach, as a member of a grade-level team, those classes mutually agreed upon by the teacher and principal;
  • Build the teaching team through communicating with their team members, collaborating in creating the classroom structure, sharing duties as mutually agreed upon by team members, nurturing other members of the teaching team, building a sense of community with the teaching team and in the classroom with students;
  • Complete curriculum mapping and unit designs for assigned grade level courses/content areas assigned;
  • Complete and keep a written record of daily lesson plans on a weekly basis;
  • Demonstrate ability/experience in diversifying instructional strategies to meet the needs of all students;
  • Demonstrate success moving students to higher levels of achievement;
  • Track classroom attendance;
  • Teach/coach in the Renaissance program a minimum of one class per trimester-when requested;
  • Teach during one period of Intersession classes-when offered;
  • Demonstrate leadership/collaboration by participating on at least one school committee;
  • Adhere to and support all school policies as set forth in the Staff and Student Handbooks, especially with regard to student conduct;
  • Plan and chaperone grade-level field studies/experiences, including overnight retreats;
  • Attend and actively participate in all orientations, staff meetings, in-services, grade-level team meetings, parent meetings, student conferences, Parent Celebration Nights, Curriculum Work Weeks, and Mission/Vision Retreats;
  • Attend a minimum of three professional growth experiences per year;
  • Engage in personal professional goal-setting and evaluation, including teacher peer-observation once per trimester;

Other responsibilities and supervision duties as assigned, including, but not limited to:

  • substitute teaching, lunch duty, hallway/stairwell/parking lot monitor, chaperoning of field studies/experiences other than the teacher's own grade-level, etc.;
  • Design interim assessments and analyze data to drive instruction to improve student learning and as preparation for standardized testing;
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, including classroom management, documentation, and communication (written, verbal and listening);
  • Be willing to participate in required trainings and activities after school/on weekends; and
  • Maintain outstanding attendance and punctuality.

In addition, the following qualities and attitudes are essential in the teacher at Catalyst: ISBE certification, experience working in an urban setting. An understanding, of his/her role as a vocation rather than just a job, which necessitates a willingness to engage in professional growth, personal reflection, and ongoing professional formation; A pledge to engage in an appropriately caring, responsible, and loving human relationship with each student entrusted to his/her care, looking upon each student as a younger brother or sister; A commitment to support and nurture the seven "C's" of the Catalyst Charter School mission Willingness to participate in workshops about the 12 Virtues of a Good Teacher and strive to incorporate them in interactions with students, parents/guardians and other school personnel: Prudence, Reserve, Gentleness, Zeal, Vigilance, Generosity, Reverence, Humility, Gravity, Silence, Wisdom and Patience.
