The Southeast Neighborhood School of Excellence (SENSE), an urban community-based elementary charter school in Indianapolis, is searching for an energetic, enthusiastic, and innovative candidate to serve as our next head of school. We are in our sixth year of operation, with 27 teachers and 7 administrative staff serving 290 students. Our mission is to provide our students with a strong foundation by nurturing academic excellence, social development, and civic responsibility. Our curriculum focuses on a “back-to-basics” approach, with emphasis on reading, writing, math, and science skills. We supplement core courses with innovative instructional strategies that allow our teachers to address the specific interests, abilities, and learning characteristics of each student. Our next head of school has a tremendous opportunity to impact many lives—including students and their families, teachers, neighbors, and more. The head of school will play a vital role in shaping our future. Among other things, he or she will help us refine our curriculum, implement the next phase of our strategic plan, cultivate professional growth among our outstanding faculty, and establish strong connections to the people of our community. We expect the head of school to build upon our many successes and transform SENSE into a community treasure, one that offers top-notch education on many different levels. The head of school should introduce new ideas and ways of working in order to grow programming, increase outreach, build relationships, and help children and their families imagine new possibilities.

 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 
• Works with faculty/staff, parents, board members, community leaders, and others to continually refine the curriculum and instructional strategies; ensures that the curriculum is effective, engaging, and challenging to both teachers and students; looks at additional programs/activities the school can offer to promote diverse educational opportunities.
• Establishes a culture based on caring, respect, trust, and support for students, parents, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders; creates an environment supportive of the particular needs of urban families and students; nurtures and sustains the school’s culture by communicating values, setting standards, and establishing accountability.
• Enhances the school’s relationship with the community; reaches out to parents, neighbors, community organizations, and other stakeholders to build mutual appreciation and a common vision; utilizes community assets to increase excellence at SENSE; develops programs that reach beyond the school’s walls to engage other stakeholders and expand learning throughout the neighborhood.
• Oversees the daily administration of the school; reviews and revises as needed processes, procedures, contracts, partnerships, etc., to make sure that the school operates in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
• Manages human resource functions such as hiring, employee relations, and evaluations; builds and implements a professional development program for faculty/staff that includes performance reviews, goal setting, and training.
• Participates in developing and implementing a long-range strategic plan for the school so that it grows in order to best meet community needs.
• Identifies external funding opportunities/resources and works with the board to acquire them; ensures the school’s long-term financial stability and builds a reliable stream of revenue from a variety of sources.

 

Requirements:

• Master’s degree is required; PhD is preferred.
• 7 to 10 years’ experience in the education field is required, with at least 3 years’ teaching experience and at least 3 years’ administrative experience.
• Ability to develop, articulate, implement, and evaluate an educational vision and culture that is shared by the community.
• Knowledge of/experience with curriculum development, learning assessment, instructional supervision, and program evaluation.
• Understanding of education law and regulations in order to ensure the school complies with local, state, and federal laws and that it remains in good standing with its chartering organization.
• Familiarity with technology and experience incorporating it into curriculum and programming.
• Ability to communicate openly and honestly, both verbally and in writing, with people from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
• Must possess a passion for community-building efforts; must have a personal commitment to helping families develop and sustain an improved quality of life.
• Ability to connect with others and inspire success, helping students, parents, and others in the community believe that a bright future is within reach and that they have the power to set goals and achieve them.
• Experience with school operations and knowledge of best educational practices; must be able to think like an entrepreneur and take creative approaches to help the school operate efficiently and effectively.
• Ability to manage HR functions; ability to provide leadership to faculty/staff, to offer performance feedback, and to assess professional development needs.
• Experience working on or with nonprofit boards.
• Must be able to work flexible hours and dedicate a significant amount of time and energy to ensure the success of the school, the students, their families, and the greater community.
