The Illinois Network of Charter Schools (INCS) opposes the merger between the Chicago Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff (ChiACTS) and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). The CTU has always been hostile toward charter public schools. The CTU is on record calling charter schools “fake schools” and mounted a “furious campaign” (their words) against equal charter funding in Springfield. When offered the opportunity, the CTU has consistently opposed charter school priorities that would benefit charter educators. For its part, ChiACTS, instead of representing the interests of charter school educators and staff, is now planning to join forces with the CTU in a misguided attempt to limit charter school autonomy and flexibility. The real victims of this political power grab are the thousands of students educated in schools affiliated with ChiACTS. INCS will continue to fight for a system of schools that maintains educator autonomy, prioritizes student and family needs, and delivers academic excellence.
