Today, the Illinois Senate followed the House of Representatives by making history in reforming education funding in our state. The Illinois Network of Charter Schools (INCS) congratulates members of the Senate for passing the landmark school funding reform, Senate Bill 1947, House Amendment 5. This legislation does the right thing: it directs additional state resources to the low-income districts that need it the most. Additionally, it helps INCS achieve its top legislative goal: equitable funding for Illinois charter public schools — a goal six years in the making.
INCS believes in the power of education to transform lives and communities. We understand that our state’s funding system has not always been fair to all Illinois students, especially those in the most underserved areas. That’s why we’ve been fighting to ensure that additional dollars flow to districts with large concentrations of low-income students for years. We are now one step closer to making that happen. We look forward to Governor Rauner’s immediate signature on this landmark legislation that will finally put additional resources where they belong — in the classroom.
