Middle School English Language Arts Teacher

Alain Locke Charter School is currently looking for a Middle School English Language Arts Instructor for the 2024-25 school year. Alain Locke runs on an extended school year calendar with breaks spread out throughout the school year. The position would begin July 8, 2024, for the start of our annual staff summer retreat. The 2024-25 school year for Alain Locke starts July 15th. At the middle school grades, ELA instructors use the Expeditionary Learning reading curriculum. Alain Locke instructors utilize a data-driven teaching and learning cycle approach to tailor and guide instruction that supports each student’s unique learning needs.

PURPOSE
Classroom instructors are responsible for planning and facilitating a well-rounded, comprehensive instructional program as well as maintaining a classroom environment that promotes learning.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Create a positive educational climate that is conducive to learning.
• Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures.
• Create lesson plans that integrate learning objectives and modify accordingly throughout the school year.
• Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that maximize learning opportunities and provide real-world applications that reflect core-aligned expectations.
• Utilize various curriculum resources and school-wide assessments.
• Utilize various teaching strategies in each lesson, including differentiating instruction to support student learning.
• Plan and execute whole/small group instruction based on assessment results.
• Perform administrative duties as needed such as maintaining grade books.
• Participate in our school-wide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) program which includes planning and facilitating individualized strategic intervention to address academic and/or social emotional needs of identified students.
• Participate in weekly school-wide professional development opportunities.
• Participate with other staff members in curriculum planning during designated meetings.
• Communicate with parents/ guardians when appropriate.
• Contribute to the accomplishment of school and classroom goals.
• Coordinate class field trips.
• Participate in activities to ensure a positive school culture.
• Follow and enforce Alain Locke policies.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
 Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
 Able to utilize materials effectively to enhance instruction.
 Strong time management skills.
 Able to adapt to different tasks as needed or requested.
 Able to work with a minimum of supervision.
 Demonstrates effective communication skills.
 Able to use a variety of problem-solving techniques.
 Able to work in a collaborative manner with school personnel and parents.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree (BA) from an accredited college or university or equivalent
• Possession of an Illinois Professional Educator License
• Command of grades/subject specific content and theoretical knowledge of learning theory, including motivation, reinforcement, evaluation, and feedback techniques.
