Director of Development

Namaste’s Director of Development will be responsible for guiding the creation of and leading the execution for a well-balanced fundraising strategy and overseeing an integrated approach to communications and public relations with external audiences. The fundraising strategy should celebrate current and past giving practices and incorporate new approaches to put Namaste on course for sustained and increased results over time. Reporting to the Executive Director,the Director of Development will serve as a key member of the Namaste leadership team and will work closely with the Board of Directors.The director will oversee one full-time employee, interns, consultants and volunteers who have unique roles in supporting the school’s fundraising, communications and public relations strategies. The Name “Namaste” This traditional Sanskrit greeting is a gesture of kindness, friendship and respect that acknowledges the unique inner qualities of all members of the school’slearning community.

Specific responsibilities of the director of development include:

Development Planning, Department Management and Operations–(20%):
•Be well-versed and passionate about the mission of Namaste
•Work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to create a multi-year strategic plan for development
•Translate the strategic plan for development into achievable steps to realize annual fundraising goals
•Work with administrative leadership to align fundraising strategies with program priorities
•Advance fundraising by working with the Board of Directors to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward existing donors and new prospects utilizing new fundraising strategies
•Track progress toward goals and make mid-course adjustments as needed
•Hire, train and supervise the development manager to include providing for her/his professional development, working with transparency and engaging in regular communication
•Oversee and, as needed, develop systems for keeping records, tracking donors, and managing correspondence
•Follow major trends or changes in philanthropy and position Namaste to respond to such trends

Individual Relationship Management, Mid-range and Major Gifts –(20%)
•Develop and adhere to an annual calendar for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual annual fund donors
•Create a portfolio management system for moving prospects through the cycle of donor relations so as to inspire higher levels of giving over time
•Carry a portfolio of mid-range and major donor prospects, building relationships with donors primarily through site visits and face-to-face meetings
•Support the Executive Director and board members in their annual and major gifts work
•Write personalized letters, reports, and proposals to lead annual and major donors
•Personally solicit annual and major donors
•Write and review communications, appeals, and other donor publication materials produced by team before public distribution for use with individual giving
•Oversee stewardship of volunteers, board, and committee members to ensure that they are cultivated properly for donor participation

Volunteer Management and Event Planning –(20%)
* Ensure successful fundraising events. Past events have attracted more than 200 guests and raised $80-150,000 through sponsorships, table and ticket sales, silent and live auctions, and raffles.
* Serve as the main point of contact for the Associate Board and assist as needed with its successful annual fundraising event.
* Develop new volunteer committees as the director determines are necessary to broaden reach of Namaste beyond current circles

Foundations and Corporate Relationship Management –(20%)
•Responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of foundations, corporations and other philanthropic institutions and organizations that currently support or could support Namaste
•Host program officers or other representatives at site visit meetings and involve other staff members to do so as well
•Work with the director of operations and finance to produce necessary financial reports for funders
•Oversee grant writing and grants calendar management with support from a grant writer

Messaging and Communications –(15%)
•Craft a new Namaste case for support that effectively “tells the story” of Namaste and its graduates and update it annually
•Package gift opportunities
•Write and/or review proposals, letters, emails and stewardship reports
•Develop the annual development communications plan
•Ensure that Namaste donor messaging is consistent across all channels
•Serve as editor of and contributor to Namaste’s regular donor e-newsletter
•Develop new materials to communicate upcoming important school milestones, achievements and opportunities
•Review and approve all donor materials and any publications

Managerial –(5%)
•Serve as a role model for staff by actively engaging and contributing to a healthy, stimulating, productive work environment
•With other managers, support ongoing process improvement atNamaste•Identify and develop new policies and procedures for development, communications and public relations
•Develop and monitor the development, communications and public relations expense budget


Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree(master’s preferred)and a minimum of five years post college work experience, including at least three years in development, preferably with experience in leading for results.The ideal candidate will be mission focused and offer the following attributes and qualifications:
