ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the President, the Director of Finance & Operations will be a key member of the leadership team and play a critical role in advancing INCS’ work as the organization advocates for and supports charter schools throughout Illinois.  S/he will lead the organization’s finance and accounting for INCS’ four legal entities, oversee operations and HR functions, and manage a team of three.  The Director of Finance & Operations will serve as a thought partner to the President and leadership team, and provide strategic guidance to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization.  S/he will also manage INCS’ Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as a thought partner to the President and leadership team and provide strategic guidance to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization.
  • Support INCS’ Board of Directors and lead finance committee meetings. Deliver timely, accurate and insightful financial reports and other information as needed.
  • With the senior leadership team, cultivate an organizational culture that embodies INCS’ core values

Financial Management

  • Lead all finance operations including accounting, payroll, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, grant reporting, compliance reporting, cash management and investment strategies for INCS’ four legal entities
  • Oversee the annual audit process and ensure a clean financial audit
  • Establish strong internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable state and federal laws
  • Manage relationships with financial institutions

Business Operations

  • Manage the organization’s business processes and systems
  • Oversee office management, including lease renewals
  • Set the strategic direction and provide oversight of the organization’s human capital strategy, including workforce planning, recruitment, retention, onboarding, compensation practices, benefits management and performance management
  • Manage vendors, legal and insurance; ensure the organization is effectively managing risk and complying with state and federal laws and regulations

Team Leadership

  • Hire and lead a high performing finance and operations team that embraces INCS’ core values
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities; establish and monitor performance goals to ensure achievement of INCS’ goals
  • Implement professional development to set employees up for success and professional growth

 

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Alignment with INCS’ mission and core values
  • Bachelors’ degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in finance/accounting, preferably with a nonprofit organization. Charter school experience a plus
  • Experience working in a fast-paced educational environment, nonprofit or social enterprise preferred
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills; ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to translate strategies from plans to action, and to implement them with strong attention to detail
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as strong financial modeling skills
  • Inspirational and servant leader with experience managing teams
  • Growth-mindset and an eagerness to learn new things and continuously improvement
