Director of High School Success

Great Lakes Academy is a high performing charter school that opened in 2014. For the 2020-2021 academic year we will be serving students in grades K-7 as we continue to add a grade level annually to reach K-8. We are seeking a high capacity, fiercely positive, growth-oriented Director of High School Success to join our team Summer of 2020.

Job Description

The Great Lakes Academy Director of High School Success is charged with supporting the school’s middle school students to prepare for the high school application and admissions process. The Director of High School Success provides advising, counseling, and support to 6-8th grade students as they prepare for the high school enrollment process. This position also supports students as they matriculate at the high school of their choice and creates systems for the school to maintain contact with GLA alumni.

Job Outputs

100% of GLA middle school students are accepted to a high school of their choice
100% of grade 7 & 8 students and their families understand the Chicago high school enrollment process
100% of grade 7 & 8 students are sufficiently prepared for the high school application and interview process and feel confident selecting a high school
An alumni support framework that tracks GLA students is clear and utilized and tracks 100% of alumni
100% of MS teachers feel clear on the MS to high school transition process
Students are supported in identifying and building skills necessary for HS transition and HS success

Job Responsibilities

Develop a clear tracking system for high school students once they leave GLA
Develop a curriculum and advisory plan to support 5-8th grade students in the high school enrollment process
Develop a system for building executive functioning skills necessary for HS success
Deliver advising, 1 on 1 supports, and whole group instruction based on the high school application and enrollment process
Coordinate high school visits, interview practice days, parent information nights, and other events relating to high school enrollment
Build relationships with all grade 7 and 8 families and individually support their HS selection process.
Track and maintain data relating to GLA student high school enrollment and matriculation and beyond
Create semester events to build a strong GLA alumni network, including alumni dinners, mentorship opportunities, Q & A panels, etc.

Critical thinker who can innovate in the design of GLA’s HS Counseling support program
Experience working in partnership with students and their families to achieve their goals
Self-directed and flexible
Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, students, families, and school leadership

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required
2+ years of experience teaching in an urban setting
Experience working with students in an advisory capacity is preferred
Experiences building and managing education programs
Knowledge of and experience with the Chicago high school enrollment process
Belief in and alignment with GLA’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable
