What You’ll Do

The Senior Accountant works with the Accounting Manager to execute the monthly close process in a timely and accurate manner. This role will primarily be responsible for account reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and other projects as assigned. However, this portfolio of responsibilities may evolve over time based on our ever-changing needs. Specific responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

Month-End Closing

Prepares journal entries, including prepaid accruals, allocations, amortizations, and reclassifications and other tasks for month-end, quarter-end, or year-end financial close
Performs routine account reconciliations for general ledger accounts
Partners with team members and school campuses to resolve discrepancies
Oversees credit card/expense reports classification and allocations
Participates in intercompany transactions and reconciliations related to all entities
Cash Maintenance

Supports the cash management function by preparing bank reconciliations
Reviews and posts journal entries related to cash activities
Financial Reporting/Other Collaborative Projects

Develops and maintains timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the end users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Suggests and implements improvements to ensure adequate internal controls and efficient processes while enhancing the way the organization views or disseminates information

What You Bring

Key Competencies

Collaborates and communicates with others – You have a proven record of building trust with internal and external stakeholders. You can handle a large volume of communications (primarily virtual/email), translate complex content to key decision-makers and stakeholders, and write/speak efficiently.
Autonomously manages ambiguous situations – You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and are able to strategically prioritize time and competing initiatives, focusing on those that will have the greatest impact on students. Autonomy does not mean that you act as a lone wolf but it does mean that you seek to exercise your leadership to problem solve as much as possible while decreasing your dependency on others to problem solve for you.
Accounting expertise with detail orientation – Accounting is your area of expertise; you know it very well and others rely on you for your expertise in this area. Furthermore, you are painstakingly meticulous and restlessly ensure that critical documents and statements are 100 percent accurate.

Qualifications

Knowledge of GAAP accounting required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field OR Bachelor’s degree in other area acceptable if coupled with multiple years of experience in an accounting function
At least 2 years’ experience in an accounting/finance function (e.g., accountant, senior accountant, financial analyst, or budget analyst) at a small- to medium-sized organization (i.e., approximately 100 – 500 employees)
Experience at an organization with subsidiaries and intercompany transactions preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite along with Abila MIP, Sage Intacct, and Fixed Assets Software (FAS) preferred
CPA certification preferred

What We Offer

We offer a competitive compensation package, including: salary commensurate with experience; paid-time off; a benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance; a flexible spending account option; commuter benefits; disability as well as life insurance. The salary for this role starts at $55,000; ultimately, any offers we make will be commensurate with experience as stated above.  In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside dedicated colleagues committed to providing high-quality, innovative educational options for families across Chicago.

Key Relationships

Reports to the Accounting Manager
Interacts with the CICS network team, external vendors, as well as our school operators and their relevant senior members.
