In Lucia’s Words:
My name is Lucia Muniz and I am a parent of a third grader, Antonio, at Namaste Charter School. Previously, my son attended a traditional public school for pre-k to first grade. As a parent of a special needs child, I wanted to ensure that Antonio’s needs were being met. When I got concerned as a parent is when I realized the high demands in the special needs area, as well as a the fact that in first grade Antonio’s special needs classroom climbed from four to 12 children. That’s when I decided to look for other options.
Fortunately, I found an option. I applied at Namaste Charter School and put Antonio’s name into the lottery enrollment system. Although I had to wait a year, the following year my son was accepted to Namaste.
In the past two years, I have seen significant changes in Antonio’s learning abilities. Namaste provides innumerable ways to motivate Antonio with exercise, healthy eating habits, respect and adequate recess time. All this is to help Antonio reach his potential and be the best student possible.
I am grateful to Namaste Charter School for the positive learning environment that they provide Antonio. The Namaste staff is attentive, supportive and resourceful to the parents and students’ needs. I am thankful to Principal Yudin for introducing me to INCS. I consider myself more knowledgeable on the needs of charter schools and the need for active parent participation.
Finally, I am honored to have been selected by INCS Parent Leadership Network. As a graduate of the INCS Parent Leadership Training, I have learned how important it is for parents, like me, to be active and to become advocates for charter schools. I’m proud to say that I have partnered with INCS by speaking at a CPS board meeting, going down to Springfield to meet with legislators, speaking to the media, and recruiting new parents at Namaste to be a part of INCS Parent Leadership Network.
Lucia was featured in INCS Parent Leadership video and in a media interview with the Chicago Tribune on her trip to Springfield for INCS 2014 Lobby Day.

“As a parent who is concerned about her child’s education I did research and signed him up for the lottery system at Namaste,” she said. “It was a great choice, the environment is better for him. It’s well-structured and offers healthy exercise and eating habits. He loves it and is doing so much better.” – Lucia Muniz, parent of a student at Namaste Charter School.
