Overview Bilingual Teacher (Spanish/English)
Founded in 1961, Dr. Antonia Pantoja’s vision for ASPIRA was to create leadership clubs to address young people’s need for positive cultural identity, leadership skills and ensure graduation from college to pursue a career and give back to the community. ASPIRA of Illinois was established in 1968 by a group of educators to address the social and educational challenges of Puerto Rican students in Chicago. This group of educators was inspired by Dr. Antonia Pantoja’s work in New York. Overtime, ASPIRA of Illinois has evolved into 4 charter schools and youth centers in Chicago.
ASPIRA Job Functions:
Instructional planning and delivery:
· Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that meet the needs of bilingual students.
· Use a variety of instructional strategies to promote student understanding and mastery of subject material.
· Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet student’s varying needs and interests.
Student Support and Development:
· Assess students’ language proficiency levels and develop individualized education plans (IEPs) as necessary.
· Provide additional academic support and tutoring and tutoring to ELL students to help them achieve proficiency in English and content areas.
· Encourage and support student’s cultural and linguistic diversity within the classroom.
Support for Dual Language Program:
· Collaborate with Dual Language Program staff to align curriculum and instructional practices.
· Promote bilingualism and biliteracy through effective teaching strategies and classroom activities.
· Assists in the development and implementation of program goals and objectives.
Assessment and Evaluation:
· Regularly assess student progress using formative and summative assessments.
· Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents on academic performance.
· Maintain accurate and complete student records, including grades and attendance.
Classroom Management:
· Create a positive and productive learning environment that is conducive to learning.
· Implement classroom management strategies to ensure a safe and orderly classroom.
· Establish and maintain high expectations for student behavior and academic performance.
Collaboration and Professional Development:
· Collaborate with colleagues, including other bilingual and general education teachers, to support student learning and development.
· Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in bilingual education and language acquisition.
Compliance and Reporting:
· Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding bilingual education and ELL support.
· Prepare and submit requite reports and documentation in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in education, Bilingual Education, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
· Valid teaching certification in the state of Illinois. Candidates must have a Bilingual Endorsement or be willing to enroll in a program to obtain their ESL and Bilingual Endorsement.
· Previous teaching experience in bilingual or ELL setting preferred.
· Fluency in English and Spanish (both written and spoken)
· Excellent communication and interpersonal and time-management skills.
