Director of Instruction – Middle School

The mission of Moving Everest Charter School is to create a school that dramatically transforms the lives of K-8 students and prepares them for success in college and in life through: the delivery of a rigorous and personalized academic program, a focus on holistic education and the development of strong character.

Background:
Moving Everest Charter School opened its doors in August 2015 with 176 students enrolled in kindergarten and first grade in a newly constructed school building in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. We are now a K-8 school with almost 800 students!

Role:
Under the supervision of the Principal, the Director of Instruction will play a critical role in the implementation of the Moving Everest Charter School educational model. The Director of Instruction will support the growth of scholars and staff members through effective feedback, professional development, testing management, and other areas of support. The Director of Instruction will serve as a core member of the leadership team at Moving Everest Charter School. As a member of the leadership team, the DOI will be required to complete other additional tasks in order to support a successful school year for all scholars and staff. This role is a 12 month position (with generous PTO and benefits) that will begin July 1.

Responsibilities:
Teacher Development and Coaching
• Work with all middle school teachers to ensure that the curriculum and instruction model of Moving Everest is carried out on a daily basis.
• Develop, enhance, and monitor best practice middle school curriculum.
• Ensure all teachers develop daily and weekly lesson plans and support teachers in the development and implementation of those plans.
• Supports teachers in the design and delivery of research-based teaching strategies for each grade level. I.e.: Teach Like a Champion.
• Provides specific evidence, feedback and suggestions during coaching meetings with teachers, identifying areas of strength, growth and refinement.
• Works with other team members in developing appropriate plans to target student academic and teacher instructional needs.
• Works with other teachers/ team members in the analysis of school and student achievement data to identify strengths and weaknesses and make suggestions for improvement.
• Assists the administrative team in inducting new teachers into the school culture, environment, and processes.
• Organizes sub plans and assist substitute teachers in preparation for daily assignments.
• Assists in the administration of standardized testing. Serves as testing coordinator for NWEA, Lexile and IAR in the middle school.
• Review grades, progress reports and report cards providing feedback to teacher in the process.

Professional Development
• Presents and models new curriculum and instruction in grade level meetings and in classrooms throughout the year demonstrating how to effectively implement the new learnings.
• In partnership with other teachers/administrators, lead the creation, development, refinement, implementation of middle school curriculum and instructional model.
• Provides access to materials and research-based instructional methods to his or her team members.
• Supports the design and delivery of research-based professional development activities for grade level, department level, and whole school groups.

Qualifications:
• Must have prior K-12 classroom teaching experience, middle school experience preferred.
• Teacher coaching experience preferred.
