In their mutual commitment to ensuring that Chicago students are provided access to high quality public education, the charter public school community and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) recently concluded discussions in a way that will protect classroom and staff resources and preserve quality programming in charter public schools. Based on this agreement, restoration of fourth-quarter budget cuts is underway, along with measures of funding stability for charter public schools in fiscal year 2020. Agreements also yielded a preservation of a per-pupil funding allocation for charters and equitable treatment concerning charter public schools facing under-enrollment challenges. CPS also now has budget certainty in terms of charter public school payments for the upcoming school year. Equitable funding is a longstanding commitment of both the Illinois Network of Charter Schools (INCS) and CPS. Working together, we are pleased that we were able to come up with a funding framework that moves us closer to full equity.
